Brady Last is our Managing Director. She set up the original Breakthrough Funding Ltd company with Sue Nelson in April 2015. It has now grown to 18 staff and a £1.8 million turnover.
Brady is responsible for the technical side of our business. She oversees the production of technical reports, the valuation of client R&D expenditure, accountant training and liaising with HMRC. She has overseen the successful submission of all our 750 successful R&D tax relief claims.
She has also developed and delivered the company's respected R&D tax relief training which is externally verified as having 3 CPD points. She has carried out dozens of training programmes to accountants and finance managers across the country and is the liaison point for our accountancy partners.
Steve Griffiths is our Senior Consultant and sits on the board of the company. He was formerly the Commander for Fire and Rescue Services for North and East Kent and Station Commander for the Channel Tunnel.
He was the National Fire and Rescue Service lead on the Prime Minister's Challenge Group for Dementia and was the Programme Manager for Kent Fire and Rescue's new build programme including the design of the UK's first road safety centre. He is the company's lead engineering and security professional.
Sue Nelson is an experienced CEO and Fellow of the Institute of Directors. She was one of three non-executive members on the Audit and Risk Committee of the Department for Communities and Local Government for six years giving audit assurance to the Permanent Secretary (Sir Peter Housden and later Lord Kerslake).
She has been a governor in the education sector most notably on the board of the University for the Creative Arts under Chairman Loyd Grossman. She was the first female Vice Chairman of the British Cleaning Council and has been a Non-Executive Director of Lantra Sector Skills Council and trustee on a number of other charities.
Sue has appeared as a guest on every national television and radio news programme in the UK from CNN, Sky News and the Asian Network to BBC Breakfast, TalkSport and Radio 4’s Today Programme. She is the author of ten books including "The Accountant's Guide to R&D Tax Relief" and "FoodTech UK". She is also Founder and Head of TLA's FoodTech Group and a regular presenter on The TechTalk Show. She is the company's lead tech professional.
Margaret Connolly MA, FCA, CTA trained at Coopers & Lybrand (London), is a fellow Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Tax Adviser. She currently sits on various corporate tax technical committees.
She was previously Head of UK Taxation for Unilever plc and has been a Senior Tax Manager at both Deloittes and KPMG, leading large teams on Owner Managed Business and Corporate Tax projects both nationally and internationally.
Margaret is recognised as one of the country’s leading minds on corporate tax matters particularly for family-run businesses. In December 2014 she set up her own specialist tax consultancy working with a range of clients.
She is on the advisory board of the Breakthrough Group and is a strategic adviser on all our R&D tax relief work.
